Audience Feedback

In class we had feedback and a discussion on our opening sequences so far and this was done in order to help us improve our work before giving it in.

There were what went well points (WWW) and even better if (EBI):

A lot of the WWW points were that they liked the way when there was the walking scene they thought the fade we chose to show time moving was really effective. Also they liked our first scene shots with the behind the shoulder shots.

The EBI points were to do with adding more shots when doing the walking scene as it got a bit boring and this could be resolved by using more different types of shots. Another point was add titles and sound which will make it a lot more effective because at this point this is what we had not completed in our opening sequence.











Conclusion- By doing this task has helped me think about what needs to be done to make my opening sequence the best it can be. I am going to take everything into consideration what has been discussed. By the EBI mainly being about the walking scene becoming a little boring we are going to re-film some shots and add in more shots to make more suspense and to be more interesting.

What have I learnt about sound?

• To create the right type of genre music is extremely important.
• Use a lot of different sounds for different effects otherwise the effect wears off.
• Especially with horror/thriller make sure you focus on the tension scenes with piercing music.
• Make sure sound is throughout otherwise it feels not real.
• Even when you think sound is not needed it is important to always emphasize it throughout the film.

Saw 1 

• when twisted pictures comes up which is the production company by the sound of the blades going round the title this immediately grabs the audiences attention.
• Theirs then silence which creates a lot of mystery to what is about to happen.
•  when the title saw comes up theirs a silent piercing noise which creates tension.
• whilst the man gets out the bath the music is very weird yet quiet which causes a little confusion to whats going to happen.
• The piercing sound of the lights being turned on really grabs attention to the audience.
• The build up of loud piercing noises to the dead body really causes uneasiness and lets the audience know what type of genre the movie is.

Dark Knight- Sound

Dark Knight

• when the production company is being shown theirs thud of thunder which automatically creates tension and disruption to the audience.
•  Theirs then a ticking noise which makes the audience feels as if theirs something going on which has no little time which creates mystery.
• The suspense build up of noise then begins when you see the robbery which causes the audience to feel intrigued into whats just happened.
• The music is very fast also which makes the audience feel as if the people are in a rush and need to hurry.
• At around 1:42 the robbers are going over a zip wire and theirs another thud of lightning which creates suspension as its dangerous going over the town center on a zip wire.
• The emphasis of the noise of the gun which is played real loud when they are in the bank makes the audience more appealed and focused on the gun.

Friday Night- Sound

Friday Night

Right from the beginning of the film Friday night it simply starts even when the production company is being shown the sound is very mysterious with loud noises building up tension before the movie has even began. After that whilst in the clouds the pitch of the noise goes a lot louder and theirs piercing noises of thunder and lightning which is causing a lot of suspense to the opening of the film. By the build up of tension of the movie it automatically gives away what type of movie it is already. Once it goes into the opening scene the music then goes out but the tension is still there because of the build up.  Whilst the character is just sitting down watching the movie, the music is quiet but very mysterious and causes tension and then whilst the character walks to the other room the music becomes a lot more loud and strong and then there's a loud bang noise when the boy finds the body. This has been done so that the audience have built there tension up knowing something bad was about to happen.

Conjuring titles

The Conjuring
The conjuring I think used a very unique way of displaying the titles. They used the titles to fit in with the background images. For example they wrote some of the titles on a book and on a a board which I think was a very different but good way of displaying them. The fonts used was a very bold font and was in black surrounded in a rectangle white box. I think this really fitted in with the rest of what was going on in the screen as it was all in black and white in the opening sequence. When most of the titles appear on the screen it is done discretely which also adds to the genre of the film giving it a weird, suspense feeling. The name of the film comes at the end of the opening sequence which I think gives a good build up of the opening sequence.  The director is the only writing which is written in white and is the first title what comes up in the scene which makes the director stand out a lot more.

Credits

Se7en Opening credits
The opening credits in this film come out throughout the opening sequence which is very common in this genre. The writing used looks almost handwritten and is very messy, this fits in very well the genre also. When the credits appear on the screen they are very jumpy and disappear  using a fade, this matches the video behind the opening sequence were there are very weird events happening. The opening credits in this opening sequence have the film studio, producers and directors names all at the beginning of the opening sequence and then afterwards the main cast and then the title of the film. After all these main credits the soundtrack maker, costume designers and then lastly the directors name again. This is a very well known order of credits.

Problems occurred when filming

We filmed some of the scenes which we wanted to be dark. However, they came out a lot darker than we thought when we began to edit them. So we decided to re- film the scenes and do the scenes in a earlier time of the day and then after when we begin to edit we then can edit the scene into making the scene seem darker than it normally would.

Institution

Twisted Pictures
Twisted pictures is an American production company.  This company mainly creates films which are horror as there main genre. The company was founded in 2004 by Evolution Entertainments. Twisted pictures are mainly know best for producing the Saw film series.




Twisted pictures may be a good institution to pick for our film as a main feature in our opening sequence is that the killer is known for having a white mask placed over the victims face and twisted pictures are mainly known for the film Saw which has also an iconic mask throughout all sequels. Twisted pictures could also be good as they are mainly known for the genre of horror.



Revolver Entertainment
Revolver is one of the UK most leading distribution and production companies Over the past 10 years Revolver has been awarded with 18 of the industry's top awards for marketing excellence.  Revolver is well known for producing Kidulthood, Shank and recently The Imposter.


Revolver could be a good institution to pick for our film as they do a lot of movies within the genre we are doing, they also have produced films which I think would fit in with our film as our film is a thriller film but with a twist with why the victims are being killed.

Universal Studios

Universal Studios is a hugely known American company and is one of the six major movie studios. They were founded in 1912 and have became huge since then.

Universal is known for doing so many famous films such as Side effects, Shrek, Jurassic park, Harry potter and many more.As Universal is such a big Institution company I don't think that it would be suitable for my film as I think it would be better to be a UK company as its only going to be a small budget.I also think that Universal has such a wide range of genre films which they have produced so I think with my film it would be best to have a company which was more based on the genre thriller to fit my film.

Opening sequences

Shutter Island
Shutter Island is all about a man who believes that he is a policeman detectuve to find out information about a psychiatric ward although the spin is that he actually is a patient about the ward and halucinates about the whole thing.
 
The opening sequence begins with a fade into a dark wet dungeon. The use of colour of the darkness of the scene and the use of mise en scene of the dungeon type place this indicates already to the audience the genre of what the film may be. The shot goes quickly into a spin shot of a stair case which makes it seem as if  you are spinning and makes it a little confusing, this also fits in well with the actual storyline as its all about a man stuck in an illness believeing he is someone else so he is confused. The titles are flashing throughout the opening sequence and are in bold red and the colour red is associated with blood and death which also helps the audience know what type of film this may be and the genre. The suspense music which builds up until the scene is in the day really creates a lot of tension and I think it is a really good way of opening a sequence. There is fire used in the opening sequence and lighting of a match which also can show the events which may occur and fire can mean danger so this creates even more tension in this opening sequence. The titles are going throughout the film which is common in thriller films.
